Launch Report: Mercedes-Benz S-Class – improved design and dynamism

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been the car of choice for high-end chauffeur companies, captains of industry and heads of state since its introduction in 1972, and there is no reason to suggest this is going to change.

The renewed exterior design of the seventh-generation W223 model, especially the front and rear lights, give the S-Class more dynamism. Furthermore, the increase in the car's length and wheelbase is positive in terms of room for passengers in the rear. The 550-litre boot is the largest among main rivals.

Driving comfort has improved compared to the previous model, with the integration of rear-wheel steering, and the air suspension is best-in-class. The interior has improved too, with a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen located in the centre of the console and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The on-board technology is among the best in any car, including a 3D instrument panel and an augmented-reality head-up display. The MBUX system recognises multiple voices, and safety features include rear airbags.

There are fewer engine offerings for the new S-Class, including the absence of an 8-cylinder version. However, the new model is available at launch with diesel engines, petrol engines will soon follow, and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version with 100km of range will be launched. The S-Class will, in a way, be available as a fully-electric car with the launch of the EQS. This may ‘steal the crown’ in terms of modernity and cutting-edge technology.

List prices have increased and are typically higher than those of key competitors. However, rivals are ageing - the BMW 7-Series, for example, is not due to be replaced for another two years or so. Mercedes Benz’s brand image is also in a strong position, supported by the latest model launches, further benefitting residual values.
